Lander ranked No. 5 in United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll

GREENWOOD – Lander men's soccer is ranked No. 5 in the country according to the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll. The ranking marks the second consecutive season the Bearcats have opened the year nationally-ranked after beginning the 2018 campaign at No. 12. Lander shares the No. 5 spot with Young Harris and Adelphi. 

The Bearcats, winners of last season's Southeast Region championship, return three all-Southeast Region performers in junior midfielder Thibault Chretien, senior defender Kyle Ferguson, and sophomore goalkeeper Jacob Withers. 

Head Coach Lee Squires led the Bearcats to a 16-2-3 overall record in 2018 and reached the quarterfinals in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history. Lander has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in each of the last four seasons, the second-longest streak in program history.

On this year's schedule, the Bearcats are slated to play two teams featured the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll. Lander will visit No. 25-ranked Limestone on Oct. 9 and will head to Young Harris on Oct. 19.

Lander will open up the 2019 season at Alabama-Huntsville on Sept. 6 and hosts Newberry for the home opener at Van Taylor Stadium on Sept. 11.
