No. 7 Lander beats Clayton State, earn first round bye in PBC Tournament

MORROW, Ga. – The seventh-ranked Lander men's soccer team secured a spot in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinals on Wednesday afternoon as the Bearcats blanked Clayton State, 4-0.

Lander (12-1-2, 5-1 PBC) assured themselves of a top-two finish in the conference and can win the league with a win on Saturday against Flagler and two losses or draws by Young Harris.

The teams kept each other off the board in the first half as Clayton State's (2-10-2, 1-5 PBC) Kari Puustinen made four saves to hold the Bearcats in check. Lander would open the scoring at the 50:10 mark when Thibault Chretien delivered a cross to Sia Jamedar, who netted his second goal in as many matches.

Just over two minutes later, Chretien found the back of the net on a cross from Oliver Brock, giving the Bearcats a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute. Brock would notch his second assist of the day at the 73:56 mark, connecting with Jordan Skelton for Lander's third goal.

Lars Kveseth capped the scoring outburst in the 82nd minute, taking a pass from Joe Conway and weaving around Puustinen for the goal.

The Bearcats outshot the Lakers 16-3 in the second half and stymied the Clayton State offense as Jacob Withers did not have to make a save in the final 50:08 of the match. The win marked Lander's 11th shutout of the season.

Lander hosts Flagler on Saturday for Senior Night at 7:00 p.m. at Van Taylor Stadium.
