No. 17 Bearcats fourth after day one of regional play

CONOVER, N.C. – The No. 17-ranked Lander men's golf team began play at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional on Monday with a 292 during its opening round to hold sole possession at the Rock Barn Golf & Spa.

The Bearcats' 8-over score put them five shots off the pace of Barry for third place. West Florida posted a 282 at the par-71, 6,940-yard layout to open up a two-shot lead with 36 holes remaining. 

Lynn's Manuel Torres and Carson-Newman's Tom Forster each fired a four-under 67 to lead the individual race. 

Sophomore Conor Richards wrapped up the day in the top-10, carding a one-under 70 to stand in a tie for seventh place. 

Richards began his day with a birdie on No. 3 to turn at an even 35. He carded birdies on Nos 10, 12 and 17 and a double-bogey on No. 16 to move to one-under. 

Junior Michael Brodie came in a stroke back of his teammate with a 71 to stand in a tie for 11th place, while senior James Bartlett's 75 tied him for 51st place. 

Senior Garrett Atkinson signed for a 76 and came in tied for 60th place. Sophomore Jon Parker tied for 82nd place with a 78. 

The Bearcats begin their second round at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday and are paired with Rollins and Young Harris.
