GREENWOOD – The Lander men's basketball team got 16 points from Tyler Brevard as the Bearcats pulled away from Coker 85-63 in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at Horne Arena.
Lander improved to 4-2 while the Cobras fell to 1-2.
"It didn't feel like a 22-point win," said head coach Drew Richards. "It was a very tight game in the first half. I thought our guys took our halftime adjustments and ran with them and that made a big difference."
The two teams hadn't played since the 1991-92 season. Lander now leads the all-time series 17-3.
Brevard scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half while leading the Bearcats with four steals and three assists.
Elijah Alston, averaging a double-double on the season, kept up the pace with another double-double as he contributed 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Bearcats.
DaJuan Moorer added 10 points for Lander.
Coker's Royce Hunter led all scorers with 26 points, making seven of 10 shots from the floor including six of nine from 3-point range. He also made six of six free throws. But he was held to five points in the second half.
Chandler Lindsey scored eight points while leading the Cobras with five rebounds and three assists.
The Bearcats missed their first five shots from the floor and also two free throws as they fell behind 7-0 in the game's first three minutes.
But Rucker started a 15-2 run with a three-point play while Berrien scored twice, giving Lander a 15-9 advantage with 13:43 left in the opening half.
Hunter's 3 from the left corner pulled the Cobras within 21-20 with 8:30 to go. Hunter's long trey from the right side put Coker back on top, 25-23, with 7:13 left.
There were five more lead changes before the end of the half and then a 35-all tie with 1:23 to go on Hunter's fifth 3, giving him 21 points already.
But the Bearcats scored the final four points to lead 39-35 at the break. Moorer made two free throws and Berrien scored at the buzzer off a long pass from Ryan Jolly, banking a shot in the lane with two defenders on him.
Berrien's dunk off an alley-oop pass from LaRaymond Spivery pushed Lander's lead to 43-37 with 16:35 left in the game.
After Hunter's sixth trey of the game pulled the Cobras within 45-40, the Bearcats scored the next nine points to lead 54-40. Brevard scored three times, twice on offensive rebounds, and Jolly stole the ball and converted a three-point play.
Berrien's 3 from the top of the key gave Lander a 57-44 advantage with 11:41 to go.
Brevard made a pair of free throws on consecutive possessions and Rucker hit a jumper, giving the Bearcats a 68-52 lead with 7:15 left. Alston's 3 pushed Lander's lead to 73-57 with 5:13 to go.
Moorer's put-back gave the Bearcats a 75-61 cushion with 3:06 left. Alston also scored off an offensive rebound, making it 79-61 inside the two-minute mark.
