Moorer’s double-double leads Bearcats past Anderson in season opener

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA. - The Lander men's basketball team took control in the second half and held on to defeat Anderson, 78-72, in the Bearcats season-opener Friday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.

Lander (1-0) was led by junior DaJuan Moorer, who tallied 18 points and 11 rebounds to earn the double-double. Elijah Alston and DeShundre Rucker each collected 11 points in the game.

It was back and forth early as both teams traded buckets and could not extend their lead. Anderson would go on a 10-0 scoring run, but the Bearcats would respond with an 8-2 run to take a 29-25 lead with 4:10 left in the first half. The Bearcats would continue to battle as they would take a 37-34 lead into the break.

Freshman Ryan Jolly (3 points) would tally the first collegiate points of his career in the first half.

In the first half, Lander would have a sizable 25-10 advantage on the glass. This efficiency would help the Bearcats collect 11-second chance points compared to the Trojans zero.

Lander came out of the break on a 6-2 scoring run to take its largest lead of the game. Anderson would soon come back and tie the game, but the Bearcats would have an answer as they would go back up. The rest of the second half the Bearcats would not relinquish the lead as they held on for the 78-72 win.

Next up, the Bearcats are scheduled to face the Southern Wesleyan Warriors on Saturday, Nov. 9. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside Flagler Gymnasium.
