GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team scored the first six runs of its home opener on Friday night en route to a 7-1 win over No. 24-ranked Millersville at Dolny Stadium.
Lander (2-3) limited the Marauders (0-1) to just three hits on the night, earning the team's second victory over a ranked opponent this year. Alex Moore (2-0) struck out 10 in 6.0 innings, allowing just one hit, a leadoff single in the top of the first. The senior sat down 16 consecutive batters and walked just one on the night.
"I thought Alex was great," said head coach Jason Burke. "He battled through those middle innings, but you could tell he got sharp again. He pitched his tail off. Offensively, I thought we just needed to have more quality at-bats. Those were some good arms we faced today. I couldn't be more proud of our guys."
The Bearcats struck first when Nathan Schreckengost led off the second inning with a walk and moved to second on a Vincent Addona walk. Carson Jones then followed with a single to left field to score Schreckengost and give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.
After one-out singles from Colton Yeager and Mike Fitschen in the third inning, Schreckengost doubled off the right-centerfield wall to score Yeager. Addona cleared the bases two batters later with a single to right field, giving Lander a 4-0 lead.
The Bearcats added another run in the fourth inning on a solo home run from Josh Gregory and pushed the margin to 6-0 when Jones scored on a wild pitch in the sixth.
Millersville broke through for one in the top of the eighth, but Yeager put the icing on the victory with an RBI single to plate Bailey Connell in the bottom of the inning.
Eli Nabholz (0-1) allowed five runs on six hits in 3.2 innings and took the loss for Millersville.
The teams will meet Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for the second game of the series.
