Baseball heads to Steinbrenner Field Spring Classic to begin 2019

TAMPA, Fla. – The Lander baseball team opens the 2019 season in the Steinbrenner Field Spring Classic at George M. Steinbrenner Field, the spring training home of the New York Yankees. Lander faces No. 2-ranked Tampa on Friday at 1:00 p.m. and No. 9-ranked North Greenville Saturday at 12:00 p.m. The Bearcats play No. 19-ranked Mount Olive Saturday at 4:00 p.m. and Sunday at 11:00 a.m.

 STORYLINES

• Lander is participating in its 22nd season of baseball and third under the direction of head coach Jason Burke. 

• The Bearcats are slated to face seven teams ranked in the NCBWA preseason top-25 this year. 

• Lander is facing Mount Olive on opening weekend for the fifth consecutive season

• The Bearcats tied for seventh in the Peach Belt Conference preseason coaches poll.

• Three Bearcat pitchers are ranked in Perfect Game's top-40 Division II prospects. Marshall Thompson is No. 23, Alex Moore is ranked No. 31, and Fraser Ellard sits at No. 34. 

• Lander returns its top six RBI producers from last year, including Carson Jones, who led the team with 35.
