DUE WEST, S.C. – The Lander baseball team outscored rival Erskine 4-0 over the final five innings to rally from a 3-1 deficit and pick up its 15th win in a row over the Flying Fleet with a 5-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bearcats (14-28) snapped an eight-game road losing streak, while Erskine (24-21) is still searching for its first win over Lander since 2010.
Lander opened the scoring in the top of the second as Conner Davis and Alex Conaway each drew walks. After Davis stole third, Brice Kirven put the Bearcats on the board with a sacrifice fly to left field for his first RBI of the season. However, the Fleet responded in the bottom of the second with three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
With one out in the top of the fifth, Nathan Schreckengost brought the Bearcats within a run as he homered down the right field line to make the score 3-2. The solo shot gave Schreckengost's a home run in his fourth consecutive game. Colton Yeager extended the inning with a two-out single and Bo Richey came off the bench to single and put the go-ahead run on base. A double steal from Yeager and Richey put both runners in scoring position and a throwing error on a Davis grounder allowed both to score as the Bearcats pulled ahead 4-3.
Yeager gave the Bearcats an insurance run in the top of the ninth, doubling home Carson Jones from first to put Lander up 5-3.
JD Cook (4-5) pitched 3.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win, allowing two hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Robbie Hoyt held Erskine without a hit for 2.0 innings to pick up his fourth save of the season. Ian Kimbrell (0-1) took the loss for Erskine, surrendering three runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
Lander returns Peach Belt Conference play this weekend as the Bearcats travel to USC Aiken.
