FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Lander baseball team rallied from a two-run deficit to push Nova Southeastern to extra innings on Saturday night, but the Sharks plated the winning run in the bottom of the 12th to claim game two of the non-conference series.
Lander (5-14) fell behind 2-0 as NSU (10-6) scored a run in the second and third innings. The Bearcats cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth when Nathan Schreckengost drove in Bailey Connell with an RBI single to centerfield, pulling Lander within a run.
Down to their final three outs in the top of the ninth, the Bearcats loaded the bases. With the tying run at third and nobody out, Alex Conaway drove a fly ball to centerfield that allowed Colton Yeager to race home and knot the score at 2-2.
Neither team managed to score again until the bottom of the 12th, when a single and an error put the winning run on third for Nova Southeastern. A one-out single from Nick Gallo brought home the game-winning and series-clinching run.
Alex Moore (0-2) took the loss for Lander, allowing one unearned run on two hits with five strikeouts in 3.1 innings of relief. Starter Joseph Whitt struck out nine in 8.0 innings, both career highs, while allowing two runs on six hits.
Cameron Churchill (2-0) earned the win for NSU, working 0.2 scoreless innings.
