Baseball overpowered by Newberry in 15-1 defeat

NEWBERRY, S.C. – A second thriller against Newberry was not in the cards for the Lander baseball team on Tuesday night, as the Bearcats (5-9) lost to the Wolves (6-8) in a 15-1 decision.

The Bearcats limited Newberry to four runs through the first three innings behind junior pitcher Erik Holton. The Wolves would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 6-0.

Holton started the game for Lander, pitching for 3.2 innings and allowing six earned runs on hits hits. He led the staff with three strikeouts on the evening.

A pitching change in the fourth inning brought in Carson Schlegel, who gave up only two hits and no runs through 1.1 innings.

Ryan Troutman, Harper Grier, and Ryan Flores would pitch for Lander in the final three innings.

Lander scored its lone run of the game in the top of the fifth, as sophomore Zack Moore drove in Nathan Schreckengost on a sacrifice fly. The Bearcats managed three hits on the night as Newberry's Tomas Sorcia tossed 5.0 innings and allowed one hit with eight strikeouts.

Junior Vincent Addona accounted for two of the three hits for the Bearcats.

Newberry added nine more runs on nine hits during the last three innings, including a 7-run sixth inning. Only five of the nine runs were earned.

Lander returns to Dolny Stadium tomorrow night for the first time in eight games to take on Southern Wesleyan.
