Women's basketball faces No. 6 Carson-Newman in NCAA second round

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. –  The fourth-seeded Lander women's basketball team (25-7) takes on top-seeded and No. 6-ranked Carson-Newman (30-2) in the second round of the NCAA Southeast Regional on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., at Holt Fieldhouse.

STORYLINES

• Lander is making its 12th apperance in the NCAA Tournament. The Bearcat are 10-11 overall in the NCAA Tournament and are back in the Southeast Regional for the fourth consecutive season. Lander earned its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1999. 

• Lander and Carson-Newman have never met in the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles defeated the Bearcats 90-87 during the regular season.

• The Bearcats have advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2011-12.

• Lander has won at least 25 games in a season for the fifth time in program history and have recorded three consecutive 25-win seasons for the first time ever.

• Friday's win marked head coach Kevin Pederson's 350th career victory as a head coach. Pederson won 88 games at Anderson from 2001-05 and has won 262 games at Lander in 13 seasons. 

• The Peach Belt Conference has had at least one team advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament every year since 1996. This marks the third consecutive season that multiple PBC teams have advanced to the second round.

• Lander is searching for its first appearance in the NCAA Southeast Regional championship since 2012.
