GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team notched a 5-1 victory over Columbus State before dropping a 3-2 decision in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon at Doug Spears Field.
Lander (15-11, 2-4 PBC) fell behind 1-0 in the second inning, but answered in the third when Brianna Surrento launched a two-run homer to give the Bearcats their first lead of the day. Columbus State (20-9, 3-1) would manage just two hits over the final five innings against Ashley Vinson (6-5), who held the Cougars to just one run on four hits with five strikeouts and a walk, handing CSU its first conference loss. Lander tacked on three insurance runs in the fifth as Chandler Carey drove in a pair with a single, followed by an RBI knock from Surrento.
The Bearcats took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of game two on a pair of wild pitches, but Columbus State answered with two runs of its own in the fifth. From then on, neither team would manage to cross the plate until the Cougars broke through in the top of the 10th for the evenutal winning run. Abby Killian (8-4) struck out 18 batters while allowing three runs on three hits in the loss.
Lander hosts Coker next Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 5:00 p.m.
