Bearcats split non-conference doubleheader with Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Lander softball team split a doubleheader with Newberry, falling to the Wolves 2-0 before earning a 6-1 win, in a non-conference battle on Wednesday afternoon.

Lander (13-9) fell behind in game one as Newberry (18-6) moved ahead on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first. The Wolves tacked on an insurance run with a solo homer in the fourth inning as Alyssa Ball (9-2) kept the Bearcats off the board, limiting Lander to five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Ashley Vinson (5-4) allowed two runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts. 

The Bearcat bats came alive in game two as Kelli McCormack drove in Brianna Surrento with an RBI single in the top of the first. After Newberry answered with a solo shot in the bottom of the inning, McCormack struck again with a homer to left-centerfield. Delaney Guerrero pushed Lander's lead to 3-1 with an RBI single in the top of the third. 

Lauren Collie drove in a pair with a fifth inning single and came around to score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly from Shannon Antonini as the Bearcats sealed the win to snap a five-game skid. 

Abby Killian (7-3) earned the win in the circle, allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts. Selice Daley (7-4) gave up two runs on four hits with two walks in 2.1 innings for the Wolves. 

Lander hosts Georgia Southwestern in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at Dolny Stadium.
