Augusta State men's tennis edges past Lander, 5-3
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The No. 12 Augusta State men's tennis team broke a 3-3 tie with No. 9 Lander Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regionals and won two of the three remaining singles matches to claim a 5-3 victory and advance to the championship match.
Sixth-seeded Augusta State improves to 16-9 overall, while third-seeded Lander ends the season at 18-5. The Jaguars will face second-seeded Columbus State, a 5-1 winner over North Georgia, at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Augusta State took a 2-1 lead in doubles when the No. 2 team of Victor Guimaraes/Victor Cabellos downed Lander's Oscar Axelsson/Ross Armstrong, 8-6, and No. 3 Jenner Stevenson/Jan Labas beat Lander's Paul-Henri Arrigoni/Samuel Poutignat, 8-6.
Lander tied the match at 2-2 when the Bearcats' Diego Zegarra downed ASU's Jenner Stevenson, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6 singles, then took a 3-2 lead after No. 2 Vincent Verpeaux defeated Henrique Boturao, 6-3, 6-1.
The Jags notted the scored at 3-3 when No. 5 Victor Guimaraes dowend Oscar Axelsson, 6-2, 6-2.
ASU won the final two matches to notch the win. No. 1 Bernardo Fernandes downed Lander's Paul-Henri Arrigoni, 6-1, 6-7, 6-1; and No. 3 Victor Cabellos beat Adam Jonsson, 2-6, 6-0, 7-5.
