No. 9 Bearcats advance to NCAA Tournament

GREENWOOD – The No. 9-ranked Lander golf team earned its second straight bid to the NCAA Tournament on Friday as the Bearcats were tabbed as the Southeast's top team entering the 2017 NCAA Tournament.

"It's a great reward for the hard work that our guys have put in the past couple of years," head coach Chipper Bagwell said of the bid.

In addition to the top-seeded Bearcats, the Peach Belt Conference will also be represented by USC Aiken, Young Harris, Flagler and Georgia College in the South/Southeast Super Regional. The three-day, three-round tournament will be held at the Fighting Joe at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Florence, Ala., beginning Monday, May 8.

"Being the number one seed shows our team that we belong on the national scene," said Bagwell.

In total, 10 teams and four individuals will compete from the Southeast region alongside 10 teams and four individuals from the South region. The South/Southeast Regional merges both regions into one of eight national super regions. The top seven teams and the two top individual finishers not with a team from the South/Southeast Super Regional will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship May 22-26 at Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Fla.

"Our goal has been [to finish in the] top five [in the region] all year," Bagwell said, "so that won't change. If we accomplish that, then we will advance on to the finals."
