AMERICUS, Ga. – The Lander men's basketball team got a double-double from Marquel Wiggins and withstood a late rally to knock off Georgia Southwestern, 85-82, on Monday night and earn its fourth win in five games.
The Bearcats used a 6-0 run over the final 1:16 of the first half to take a 44-35 lead into the locker room, then built a 13-point lead, their largest of the night, following a Jordan Dingle three-pointer with 16:26 remaining.
Leading by eight with 3:25 to play, Lander saw Georgia Southwestern (3-21, 1-17 PBC) pull within a point with 45 seconds to play. With the shot clock dwindling down, Morris Robinson Jr. drove inside and dished to TJ Knight, who was fouled. Knight knocked down both free throws to give the Bearcats an 85-82 lead with 18 seconds remaining.
The Hurricanes had a final look at overtime, but Quenten Taylor's corner three rattled out and Knight snagged the rebound to give the Bearcats the victory
Lander hosts USC Aiken Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in Finis Horne Arena.
