CENTRAL, S.C. – The Lander men's basketball team ended its opening at the Classic at Southern Weselyan with a 77-64 loss to Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon.
The Bearcats (1-1) were led by Marquel Wiggins' 19 points and seven rebounds, both team highs. Elijah Alston finished with 12 points on the day and Rahu Purdie netted 10 points and dished five assists in the loss.
Carson-Newman (2-0) raced out to a 41-24 halftime lead, thanks in part to made six three-pointers. The Eagles went just 2-of-7 from beyond the arc in the second half, but shot 60.0 percent from the field over the 20 minutes to hold off Lander.
Lander will face Tusculum on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. in its home opener at Finis Horne Arena.
