GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team committed five errors for the second consecutive night and could not rally from an early hole, falling 12-4 to USC Aiken as the Pacers clinched the Peach Belt Conference series on Friday night at Dolny Stadium.
Lander (16-30, 11-15 PBC) fell behind 4-0 in the third inning as USC Aiken (24-17, 14-9 PBC) plated three runs with two outs to grab the early lead.
The Bearcats got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Bailey Connell singled up the middle to bring home Kyle Jenkins, but the Pacers answered with a run of their own in the top of the fifth.
Roury Glanton brought the Bearcats within three when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Colton Yeager, but Zach Rafuse struck out Connell to end the Bearcat threat.
The Pacers extended the lead to 9-2 with four runs in the top of the sixth and tacked on another run in the top of the seventh and two more in the eighth.
Carson Jones delivered his second home run of the weekend and the 31st of his career in the bottom of the eighth, smacking a two-run shot off the batter's eye in centerfield.
Rafuse (8-0) allowed two runs on eight hits with two walks in four strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work, while Davis Cunningham (3-6) allowed two earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts in 4.2 innings for Lander.
The Bearcats and Pacers will wrap up the series Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. on Senior Day at Dolny Stadium.
