GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team salvaged a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader split Saturday as Joseph Whitt pitched seven strong innings and Josh Gregory carried the offense in a 5-1 victory over Georgia College at Dolny Stadium. The Bobcats won Saturday's first game, 12-5.
Gregory belted an inside-the-park homer and two-run double to lead the Bearcats (15-24, 10-11 PBC) in Game 2.
Cam Hill and Wesley Wommack had four hits apiece in a 19-hit attack to lead Georgia College (20-14, 11-8 PBC) in Saturday's opener.
The Bobcats won the three-game series, beating Lander on Friday.
Whitt allowed one run on four hits in seven innings in Saturday's finale, walking four and striking out seven. Whitt (5-3) was the winning pitcher while Ryan Troutman pitched the final two innings for his fourth save. Bryce Bowen (0-3) was the losing pitcher.
Lander's Game 2 victory Saturday broke an eight-game losing streak against Georgia College.
Jayson Cook's RBI single gave Georgia College a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning of Game 2.
Lander tied it in the bottom of the second when Gregory hit a leadoff inside-the-park homer to right center. As the ball hit the fence and ricocheted back into center field, Gregory was waved home and slid safely ahead of the throw. It was Gregory's fourth homer of the season.
Lander extended its lead in the seventh after Zack Moore's leadoff triple. Addona was hit by a pitch and Gregory belted a two-run double into the gap in left center, making it 4-1.
The Bearcats made it 5-1 in the eighth when Roury Glanton singled, moved to second on Moore's ground out, and scored on a single by Addona.
Troutman retired the side in the ninth to finish off the win.
Gregory was 2-or-3 with a double, homer and three RBI to pace the Lander offense while Addona and Jenkins had two hits apiece.
Georgia College took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning of Game 1 on Garrett Green's RBI single and Shane Connahan's run-scoring double.
The Bearcats took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth after Mike Fitschen singled and Landon Dupert was hit by a pitch. Bailey Connell moved the runners over to second and third when he successfully bunted a high inside pitch. Glanton hit a game-tying two-run single to left and scored the go-ahead run on Moore's line drive double past third.
The Bobcats took a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth when Cal Gentry plated the tying run by reaching on a fielder's choice, Wommack had an RBI single, and Connahan added a sacrifice fly.
Lander pulled within 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth when Fitschen hit a two-out single and scored on Dupert's double past the first baseman.
Georgia College expanded its lead to 7-4 in the sixth when Cassius Young scored from third on an errant pickoff attempt at first base while Gentry added a run-scoring single.
The Bearcats had a promising rally in the bottom of the seventh when Jenkins hit a one-out single, raced to third on Fitschen's single and scored on a single by Dupert. But a double play ended the threat as Lander still trailed, 7-5.
The Bobcats added two runs in the eighth, including Hill's fourth hit of the day which produced one of those runs.
Georgia College extended the lead to 12-5 in the ninth. Gentry and Austin Holloway lifted sacrifice flies while Green beat out an infield single to bring in the final run.
Bobcats reliever Brad Spinner (6-2) was the winning pitcher while Bearcats starter Davis Cunningham (3-5) took the loss.
Fitschen paced Lander's offense in the opener going 3-for-5 with two runs while Glanton, Dupert and Moore had two hits apiece.
