FLORENCE, S.C. – The Lander baseball team earned its second win of the weekend on Saturday as the Bearcats rallied past Francis Marion, 9-6, to give the Bearcats their second series win in conference play.
Lander (11-18, 7-7 PBC) used a three-run homer from Carson Jones in the top of the eighth to take its first lead of the day, then added two insurance runs in the ninth to earn its sixth consecutive win over the Patriots (18-11, 9-8 PBC)
FMU's first two batters of the day homered as the Patriots built a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Lander trimmed the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the third with a pair of solo shots from Zack Moore and Josh Gregory before Bailey Connell scored on a passed ball.
Vincent Addona tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth, but Francis Marion reclaimed the lead in the sixth on a wild pitch.
After singles from Roury Glanton and Colton Yeager, Jones put the Bearcats on top with a three-run shot with two outs in the top of the eighth. Connell opened the ninth with a double and came around to score on a Mike Fitschen single. A Patriot error would give Lander its second run of the inning as the Bearcats extended the lead to 9-5.
FMU managed three hits in the ninth, but could only plate one run as Ryan Troutman closed the door to give Lander the series.
Ryan Flores (1-1) earned his first win of the season with a scoreless inning of relief, while Troutman allowed one unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts in 2.0 innings to pick up his first career save. Francis Marion's Patrick Orlando (0-1) was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs on four hits in 1.0 inning of relief.
Lander and FMU conclude the series Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
