GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team managed just three hits on Tuesday night as the Bearcats dropped a midweek contest with No. 8-ranked Catawba, 9-0, at Dolny Stadium.
Lander (9-18) struggled offensively against Catawba (24-7), failing to reach base in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Mike Fitschen recorded two of the Bearcats' three hits on the night.
Catawba took the lead. with two runs in the second, then plated five in the third inning to break the game open. A pair of insurance runs in the fourth and the eighth capped the night's scoring.
Nick Foray (0-2) allowed two runs on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in his first career start, while Greg Brown (2-0) tossed five scoreless innings of relief, allowing just a single hit with four strikeouts to earn the win for Catawba.
The Bearcats return to Peach Belt Conference play this weekend with a series at Francis Marion.
