FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Lander baseball team stormed back from a 5-2 ninth inning deficit with five runs in the ninth and 10th innings to knock off Nova Southeastern in the series finale on Saturday afternooon.
Lander (6-14) trailed 5-2 entering the ninth inning before loading the bases with one out. Bailey Connell walked to cut the deficit to 5-3 and Mike Fitschen followed with a two-run single up the middle to knot the score.
Nova Southeastern (10-7) could not score in the bottom of the ninth and the two teams headed to extra innings for the second time in as many days. Kyle Jenkins led off the top of the 10th with a single and Luke Johnson doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Bo Richey brought home both with a single through the left side, giving Lander a 7-5 lead.
The Bearcat bullpen held off the Sharks in the bottom of the 10th to snap Lander's nine-game losing streak.
JD Cook (3-2) earned the win with 3.2 innings of relief, allowing one run on seven hits with three strikeouts. NSU's Kyle Kilbourne (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits without recording an out.
Nova Southeastern took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, but Lander answered on a two-run homer from Nathan Schreckengost in the top of the fourth. The Sharks tacked on a run in the fourth, fifth and the eighth to build a 5-2 advantage.
Lander continues its seven-game road trip on Wednesday afternoon at North Greenville.
