AMERICUS, Ga. – The Lander baseball team tied a season-high with 19 runs as on Sunday afternoon as the Bearcats hammered Georgia Southwestern 19-5 to win their second Peach Belt Conference series of the season.
Lander improves to 12-14 overall and 6-6 in the PBC, while GSW drops to 11-15, (5-7).
JD Cook (2-1) earned the win for Lander, striking out six batters and walking three, while allowing two runs on five hits.
The Hurricanes' Jordan McIlwain (2-3) took the loss after striking out one, walking four and allowing 10 runs on seven hits in 2.0 innings.
Lander struck for six runs in the first inning. Alex Conaway launched a two-run homer to give the Bearcats the early lead, Bailey Connell doubled home Carson Jones, Chuck Lawing ground out to plate Nathan Schreckengost, Connell came around to score on an error and Mason Dodd scored on a balk.
After a Hurricane run in the bottom of the first, Lander responded with an RBI double from Schreckengost, who then scored on a Reed Gray single in the second.
Ryan Troutman's two-run homer in the third inning pushed the Bearcat lead to 10-1. Troutman then drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning, followed by a three-run triple from Conaway and a two-run homer from Jones to make the score 16-1 Lander.
Lander's scoring concluded in the fifth inning as Troutman drew another walk with the bases loaded, which Colton Yeager followed with a two-run single to give the Bearcats a 19-1 lead.
Georgia Southwestern managed a run in the fifth and three in the eighth to cap the scoring.
For Lander, Conaway batted 3-for-6 with six RBI.
