MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Mason Dodd and Zach Giczewski combined to drive in four runs in the 11th inning as Lander defeated Montevallo 11-8 on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a Peach Belt Conference series.
Lander improved to 7-7 overall and 2-0 in the Peach Belt. The Falcons fell to 8-6 overall and 0-2 in the PBC.
The Bearcats will attempt to complete the three-game sweep Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Lander scored in the top of the first on an RBI single from Nathan Schreckengost that scored Alex Conaway. Montevallo answered with a solo home run in the second and an RBI single in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
However, Montevallo rallied for five runs in the seventh to tie the game on RBI doubles from Jacob Whiting and Collin Dupree and a two-run single from Matthew Furuto.
The Falcons threatened in the bottom of the tenth on a leadoff triple from Furuto. Bearcat reliever Cameron Tekker struck out Caleb Ledbetter, then induced a groundball from Sebastian Samuels to Dodd at third, who threw out Furuto at the plate. An error and a walk loaded the bases with two outs, but Mark Castellucci flew out to right field as Lander escaped the inning.
In the top of the 11th, the Bearcats loaded the bases on two walks and an error with two outs. Dodd drew a walk to give Lander an 8-7 lead. Giczewski then singled to right field and the bases emptied as the ball was misplayed, allowing Dodd, Connell and BJ Bush to all score.
An RBI double from Furuto in the bottom of the inning cut the Bearcat lead to 11-8, but Tripper Ergle retired the Falcons to give Lander the victory.
Tekker (2-0) was credited with the win, allowing no runs on one hit, a walk and four strikeouts in 2.1 innings.
Falcon reliever Cas Silber (1-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven walks in 2.2 innings of work.
Conaway, Jones and Dodd all went 2-for-5 for the Bearcats, while Furuto was 4-for-7 for Montevallo.
