Lander baseball falls in series finale to Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The No. 33-ranked Mount Olive Trojans baseball completed its three-game series sweep of No. 28 Lander Sunday afternoon when UMO knocked off the Bearcats, 14-2, at Scarborough Field.

Mount Olive improves to 3-0 overall, while Lander moves to 0-3.

UMO's Brighton Hudson (1-0) earned the victory on the mound after striking out five, walking one and allowing two earned runs on five hits in 6.0 innings.

Lander's Garrett Lovorn (0-1) suffered the loss with five strikeouts, three walks and seven earned runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings.

The Trojans jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first two innings when David Mayo scored on a wild pitch in the first inning and Ben Connor knocked a two-run homer in the second inning. 

Lander cut the margin to 3-2 in the top of the third as Colton Yeager scored on a fielder's choice and Alec Dowell singled home Zach Giczewski.

However, the Trojans erupted for 11 runs the rest of the way, including a six-run eighth inning to complete the sweep.

For Lander, Dowell batted 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Yeager, Giczewski, Alex Conaway and Ryan Troutman each recorded one hit as well.

For the Trojans, Ricky Surum led the way, batting 4-for-4 with four four RBI, two runs scored and a walk.
