GREENWOOD - Zach Daly and Colby Lusignan smacked two home runs each and Will Jones struck out seven Friday evening to lead the nationally ranked Lander baseball team to a 10-5 Peach Belt Conference victory in Game 1 of its league series against UNC Pembroke at Dolny Stadium.
Lander, which is nationally ranked No. 10 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and No. 11 by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, improves to 33-11 overall and 20-8 in the PBC, while UNCP drops to 24-16-10-12.
The second game of the series will be played at 5 p.m., Saturday, with the third at 1 p.m., Sunday.
Jones improved to 6-2 on the season after walking two and allowing four earned runs on eight hits in 7.2 innings.
UNCP's Jesse Stinnett (5-3) suffered the loss after allowing seven earned runs on eight hits in one inning of action.
Lander continued the home run barrage in the second after Mason Dodd scored on a throwing error as Matt White, Daly and Lusignan belted consecutive homers to go up 9-0, followed by Alex Conaway double that sent Berry home.
The Braves cut it 9-2 in the fourth on Nick Debo's two-run homer to right field, but the Bearcats came right back in their half of the inning to add one run on John Mangum's RBI single that scored Lusignan.
After Lander added one run in the fourth on Mangum's RBI single, the Braves picked up two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to close it 10-5. In the sixth Drew Beaver belted a two-run homer, followed by Hayden Buffkin's run-scoring single in the seventh.
For Lander, Berry batted 3-for-4 and Mangum 3-for-5, while Daly, Lusignan and Conaway contributed two hits apiece.
For UNCP, Stibel Aleman sava went 2-for-5.
