Lander baseball completes third consecutive PBC sweep

GREENWOOD – Held to just one hit through the first seven innings, the Lander Bearcats erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth to complete their fourth Peach Belt Conference sweep of the season with an 8-4 victory over Augusta University Sunday afternoon at Dolny Stadium. It was Lander's 12th consecutive win.

The Bearcats improved to 20-5 overall, 12-3 in the Peach Belt. They have swept four of their five PBC series. Lander has swept three consecutive Peach Belt series for the first time in school history.

The Jaguars fell to 13-10, 5-4.

Augusta took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Hunter Boose's homer over the center field fence.

The Bearcats tied it in the bottom of the first when Zach Daly walked, moved to third on Colby Lusignan's double to left center, and scored on Thomas Berry's ground out to first.

The Jaguars put two runners on in the top of the second, but Lander left fielder Taylor Kellner made a sliding catch to save at least one run for the final out.

Augusta took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth when Jim Wagner doubled into the right-field corner, scooted to third on a bunt single by Jamal Cummings, and scored on Nick Rau's sacrifice fly to shallow center.

The Jaguars increased their lead to 4-1 in the top of the sixth with Cole Thompson delivering an RBI single and Tyler Roberts being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Lander, without a hit since the first inning, finally erupted in the eighth against Augusta starter Will Thompson and five relievers.

Will Jones led off the eighth with a single and scored on Alex Conaway's double to left center. Matt White followed with an RBI single and Daly was walked by Thompson, who was then replaced by Augusta closer Frank Warren. Lusignan greeted Warren with a game-tying RBI single. The Bearcats took a 5-4 lead when Berry grounded to the first baseman, who tried to turn a double play but his throw to second sailed into left field scoring Daly. Kellner's sacrifice fly plated Lusignan, making it 6-4. Mason Dodd hit a two-run single up the middle.

Bearcats starting pitcher JD Waite allowed four runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings, striking out three and walking two. Tripp Ergle tossed 2.1 innings of hitless relief, including four strikeouts. Robbie Hoyt (1-0) replaced Ergle and was credited with the win. Brandon White tossed a scoreless ninth.

Thompson (2-2) took the loss despite allowing only one hit through the first seven innings.

Lusignan was Lander's leading hitter, going 2-for-3.

Wagner was Augusta's top hitter, going 3-for-3. Boose was 2-for-5 with a homer, while Taylor and Thompson also had two hits apiece.
