Baseball pounds out 17 hits in 8-7 upset of No. 20 Wolves

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Lander baseball team pounded out 17 hits Tuesday afternoon en route to an 8-7 non-conference, upset victory over No. 20 Newberry College at the Smith Road Complex.

Colby Lusignan, Taylor Kellner, Mason Dodd and Jordan Curtis recorded three hits apiece for the Bearcats, who improve to 9-5 overall. The Wolves drop to 11-3-1 on the season.

Lander's Sam Linn (2-0) was awarded the win after striking out five, walking three and allowing four earned runs on 11 hits in five innings. Brandon White earned his fifth save of the season with two strikeouts, three walks and one earned run.

Newberry's Danton Hyman (0-2) took the loss with three strikeouts one walk and five earned runs on seven hits in three innings of work.

Lander took an early 3-0 lead on RBI doubles by Thomas Berry in the first inning and Will Jones and Curtis in the second that respectively scored Lusignan, Dodd and Jones.

Newberry trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the second on RBI singles by Jacob Bass and JoJo Bradley.

The Bearcats pushed their advantage to 6-2 in the fourth when Curtis drove in Kellner, and Lusignan's RBI single plated Curtis and Dodd. Newberry responded by cutting it 6-3 in the bottom of the inning after Tommy Passerello advanced home on a passed ball.

Lander made it 7-3 in the fifth after Dodd crossed home plate for the third time on White's RBI single to center field.

The Wolves remained in contact in the bottom of the inning when Trejon Smith scored on Bass' fielder choice, and Robert Kosch singled in Jeff Sneed to make it 7-5.

But Lander retaliated for an 8-5 in the sixth on Kellner's RBI single.

With bases loaded in the seventh, the Wolves made it 8-6 after Daymon Totherow scored on a passed ball. Newberry notched the final run of the game in the ninth when Kosch scored on a wild pitch.
