Waite leads No. 32 Lander baseball past Wingate, 7-2

WINGATE, N.C. - JD Waite earned the complete game victory and the No. 32-ranked Lander baseball team used a four-run, sixth inning Tuesday afternoon to claim a 7-2 non-conference win over Wingate at Ron Christopher Stadium.

Lander improves to 2-1 overall, while Wingate starts the season at 0-1.

Waite (1-0) struck out four, walked one and allowed two earned runs on five hits. Wingate's Hunter Morgan, one of 11 Bulldog pitchers to take the mound, was credited with the loss after allowing two earned runs on three hits in one inning of work.

Lander took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Matt White doubled and later scored on Thomas Berry's RBI single.

Wingate rallied for two runs in the second inning on RBI singles by Tyler Napierala and Reece Daniel.

White then blasted his third home run in as many games and Sage Cornatzer's RBI groundout plated Gatlin Minick to put the Bearcats up 3-2 in the fifth inning.

The Bearcats continued its homerun assault in the sixth inning on back-to-back homers by Thomas Berry and Matt Smith, followed by Gatlin Minick and Reed Gray crossing the plate on a Cornatzer singled coupled with a fielding error.

For Lander, White, Berry and Taylor Kellner collected two hits each.
