Baseball drops Peach Belt doubleheader at UNCP

PEMBROKE, N.C. - In their final Peach Belt Conference series of the season, the Lander baseball team lost both ends of doubleheader Saturday at UNC Pembroke's Sammy Cox Field. The Braves claimed the first game, 9-4 and 24-9 in the second.

The Braves improve to 33-10 overall and 17-9 in the PBC, while Lander is now 21-25, 10-19. The series concludes with a single game at 1 p.m., Sunday.

In the first game, UNCP's Andy Sullivan (4-1) was awarded the win after striking out two, walking two and allowing three earned runs on eight hits in seven innings.

Lander's Will Jones (5-3) suffered the loss, striking out five, walking one and allowing six earned runs on 12 hits in 7.1 innings.

Cody Adkins's RBI single plated Drew Beaver, then Chad Whitehead blasted a two-run homer to left field give the Braves a 3-0 advantage.

The Bearcats cut it to 3-1 in the third on Colby Painter's RBI double that scored Matt White, then White scored again on fielder's choice in the fifth to make it 3-2.

UNCP went up 7-1 in the fifth when Drew Cole singled in Whitehead and Zade Denton smacked a three-run homer.

Weston Lawing's solo shot in the Lander seventh cut the score 7-3.

The Braves came right back with two runs in the eighth when Whitehead doubled in Adkins then scored on a throwing error to make it 9-3.

Lander finalized its scoring in the ninth with Colby Lusignan's home run.

For Lander, White batted 3-for-4, while Lawing and Painter had two hits apiece.

In the second game, The Braves' Zach Andrews (5-0) earned the win with one strikeout, three walks and six earned runs on eight hits in five innings.

Lander's Andrew Reardon (1-4) took the loss with three strikeouts, one walk and five earned runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings.

UNCP went up 1-0 in the first when Cole advanced home on a double play.

The Bearcats tied it at 1-all in the second after Thomas Berry advanced home on a fielding error, then went up 3-1 in the third on White's two-RBI single that sent Berry and Lusignan home.

The Braves came right back to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the inning on Denton's two-run homer.

But UNCP exploded for three runs in the fourth and eight more in the fifth to go up 14-3.

In the fourth, Cole singled in Billy Vaughn and was followed by Collin Cuthrell's two-run homer.

In the fifth, Nolan Pierce scored on a three-error Lander play, Vaughn went home on a wild pitch, Cuthrell and Denton had RBI doubles, and Ben Schmucker ended the inning with a two-run homer.

The Bearcats put together a five-run, sixth-inning in the sixth on Taylor Kellner's two-run homer, Lawing's RBI single and Berry's two-RBI double.

Cole's homer in the seventh kicked off a 10-run inning for the Braves as they extended their lead to 24-8 on RBI singles by Schmucker and Dalton Knight, Beaver's bases-loaded walk, two wild pitches, Whitehead's RBI groundout and Cuthrell's two-run homer.

Lander scored its final run in the eighth after Bryce Clifton went home on White's fielder's choice.

For Lander, Berry batted 3-for-4 and Kellner 2-for-4.
