Lander baseball triumphs over Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. – The Lander baseball team scored three runs in the second inning and one each in the third, fifth and ninth to defeat Belmont Abbey, 6-1, Wednesday in a non-conference game at Abbey Yard.

Lander improves to 17-19 overall, while the Crusaders slip to 18-17.

The Bearcats' Cam Hokanson (1-0) was awarded the win after striking out five, walking one and allowing three hits in 2.2 shutout innings.

The Crusaders' Harry Ferguson (4-6) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits in two innings of work.

The Bearcats hit Ferguson with three runs in the second inning on Alex Conaway's RBI single that plated Thomas Berry, and John Mangum's two-RBI single that drove in Conaway and Colby Lusignan.

Weston Lawing doubled and later scored on a fielding error in the third, Aaron Poole went home on a wild pitch in the fifth, and Lusignan homered in the ninth over the right field fence.

For Lander, Lusignan batted 2-for-4, while Mangum went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Belmont Abbey's lone run came in the sixth inning when Armen Calilao drove in Kayden Krause with a single to left field.
