Wingate baseball triumphs over Lander, 12-10

GREENWOOD – Wingate's Josh Clark, Thomas Spitz and Blake Prince all had three-run home runs Wednesday night to lead the Bulldogs' baseball team to a 12-10 non-conference victory over Lander at Dolny Stadium.

Wingate improves to 18-8 overall, while Lander moves to 12-14.

The Bulldogs' Hunter Morgan (1-0) was awarded the win on the mound after striking out two, walking one and allowing one earned run on two hits in two innings pitched.

Lander's Erik Holton (0-1) suffered the loss with one strikeout, one walk and two earned runs on five hits in 2.1 innings.

Wingate took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Clark's three-run homer to left field, then made it 6-0 in the second on Spitz's three-run shot.

Lander cut it to 6-1 in the second on Matt White's RBI single that plated Will Jones.

The Bearcats tied it at 6-all in the five-run third inning as Taylor Kellner stroked a two-run homer over the right field fence, Zach Daly and John Mangum scored on an error, and Jones stole home.

Wingate erupted for five runs in the fifth to take an 11-6 lead when Prince belted a three-run homer and Colby Barnette followed with a two-run shot. The Bulldogs added another run in the sixth on Prince's RBI single.

Lander came back with three runs in the sixth and narrowed the margin to 12-9 when Alex Conaway doubled and later scored on a wild pitch, Chris Hyatt went home on Mangum's sacrifice bunt, and Colby Lusignan drove in Kellner.

Zach Giczewski's RBI single in the eighth sent Mangum home as the Bearcats cut the Wingate margin to 12-10.

For Lander, Mangum batted 3-for-4, while Colby Painter went 2-for-4.
