Lander baseball sweeps Jaguars in PBC doubleheader

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Will Jones smacked a ninth-inning grand slam in the first game and the Lander baseball team pounded out 41 hits and produced 38 runs Sunday afternoon as the Bearcats swept GRU Augusta, 21-5 and 17-4, in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Lake Olmstead Park.

Lander improves to 12-13 overall and 5-10 in the PBC, while the Jaguars drop to 8-12, 3-6.

The first game lasted 3 hours and 30 minutes and the second, three hours.

In the first game, Kyle Boraski (3-2) earned the win after striking out three, walking three and allowing two earned runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work.

Augusta's Matthew Kuhlenberg (1-2) suffered the loss, striking out three, walking two and allowing three earned runs on four hits in two innings.

Lander took a 4-0 lead in the first inning after Matt White scored on an error, Thomas Berry went home on a passed ball and Taylor Kellner doubled in Chris Hyatt and Alex Conaway.

The Bearcats stretched the margin to 5-0 in the second on Colby Lusignan's RBI single that plated Berry.

The Jaguars trimmed the lead to 5-2 in the second on RBI singles by Cole Thompson and Kevin Dodson.

Lander answered with two runs in the fourth to ease out to a 7-2 advantage when Hyatt drove in Lusignan and later scored on a wild pitch.

GRU Augusta made it 7-3 in the fifth when Nick Rau singled in CJ Reed.

Lander exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning to take a 14-3 advantage. John Mangum's RBI single through the right side plated Hyatt, Colby Painter went home on Kellner's groundout, White tripled in Jones, Conaway drove in White, Lusignan tripled in Conaway and Berry, and Hyatt's RBI single sent Lusignan home.

After Kellner's solo homerun in the eighth gave Lander a 15-3 advantage, the Bearcats finalized its scoring in the ninth when Painter and Reed Gray added RBI singles that scored Lusignan and Hyatt, then Jones ended the ninth with a grand slam.

The Jaguars mustered up two more runs in the ninth when Dodson scored on a bases-loaded walk and Zach Murray drove in Bradley Dennis.

For Lander, which pounded out 22 hits, Kellner batter 4-for-6 with four RBI, Hyatt 4-for-6 with three RBI and Painter 4-for-5 with one RBI. White, Lusignan and Jones had two hits apiece.

In the second game, Joe Mackey (2-2) was awarded the win after striking out six, walking one and allowing four earned runs on eight hits in 7.1 innings.

GRU Augusta's Tyler Brown (2-3) took the loss with three strikeouts, two walks and seven earned runs on nine hits in four innings.

Lander once again got the early lead on Lusignan's two-run homer in the first.

In the fourth, Kellner hammered a two-run shot to right field, then Mangum added an RBI single and White an RBI triple to go up 6-0.

Lander put five more runs on the scoreboard in the fifth to make it 11-0 as Painter's RBI double plated Zach Giczewski, then Jones singled in Painter, White earned an RBI on a single that scored Jones and Mangum, then Berry knocked in White.

The scoring continued in the sixth with Mangum's RBI double that scored Hyatt, while Painter scored a run off Kellner's groundout as the Bearcats went up 13-0.

The Bearcats stretched it to 15-0 in the seventh on Painter's two RBI single,

The Jaguars scored four runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Jim Wagner, Bradley Dennis, Nate Crown and Andrew Gomez.

Lander finalized its scoring in the ninth with two runs on Painter's RBI doubled that sent Giczewski and Conaway across the plate.

For the Bearcats, Painter batted 4-for-6 with five RBI, Mangum went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Berry, Conaway and Hyatt had two hits each.
