Baseball's rally falls short in 11-inning loss to Jaguars

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Lander's Colby Lusignan blasted a three-run homer and Thomas Berry drove in Matt White to lead the Lander baseball team in the four-run ninth and force extra innings, but GRU Augusta's Nate Crown lined the game-winning, RBI single up the middle in the 11th inning Saturday to give the Jaguars a 10-9 Peach Belt Conference series-opening win at Lake Olmstead Park.

After a game that last 4 hours and 25 minutes, the two teams will complete the three-game series on Sunday with a 1 o'clock doubleheader.

GRU Augusta improves to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in the PBC, while Lander moves to 10-13, 3-10.

The Jaguars' Frank Warren (1-0) earned the victory on the mound, striking out five and allowing one earned run on three hits in 2.1 innings pitched.

The Jags grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Nick Rau's two-RBI single, then made it 4-0 with Kevin Dodson's RBI double and CJ Reed's RBI single in the second.

Lander tied the game at 4-4 in the third after Zach Giczewski and Colby Painter scored on an error, White drove in Jones, and pinch runner Taylor Kellner went home on Alex Conaway's single to right center field.

GRU Augusta regained the lead at 5-4 in the fourth on Cole Thompson's lead off home run over the left field fence, then made it 6-4 in the fifth when Hunter Boose drove in Clint Hardy.

The Jags added three more in the seventh to go up 9-4 after Rau went home on Thompson's fielder's choice and Sanderson singled in Connor Gilbert and Bose.
