NEWBERRY – Lander's Thomas Berry batted 3-for-3, scored four runs and drove in six RBI Wednesday night to lead the Bearcats' baseball team to a 16-4 non-conference victory over Newberry at the Smith Road Complex.
Lander, which pounded out 15 hits, improves to 10-11 overall, while the Wolves drop to 12-9.
The Bearcats Conner Davis (1-0) earned the win on the mound, striking out two, walking two and allowing zero earned runs in three hitless innings.
Newberry's Alex Rhodes (3-1) was tagged with the loss after striking out three, walking two and allowing seven earned runs on five hits in 1.2 innings.
Newberry cut the margin to 3-1 in the bottom of the inning on Albert Baur's RBI double that plated Robert Kosch.
But the Bearcats came right back with six runs in the second inning to go up 9-1. Zach Giczewski started the scoring barrage off with a two-run homer and was followed by Berry's two-RBI single that scored Lawing and Matt White, and a Colby Lusignan RBI double that drove in Alex Conaway and Berry.
Lander stretched the lead to 11-1 in the third on an RBI double by Berry and an RBI single by Conaway.
Newberry trimmed it to 11-2 in the bottom half when Kosch scored on a Lander fielding error.
The Bearcats extended the lead to 16-2 in the fourth on a White sacrifice fly, and RBI singles by Lawing, Conaway and Lusignan.
For Lander, Conaway went 3-for-5 with one run scored and three RBI, while Lusignan and Giczewski had two hits apiece.
