No. 3 Lander baseball falls to No. 13 Trojans in opener

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The No. 13-ranked Mount Olive baseball team exploded for 10 runs in the fifth inning Saturday afternoon and earned a 15-8 non-conference victory over No. 3 Lander at Scarborough Field in the season opener for both teams.

The two teams will meet again at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Mount Olive's Rodriguez (1-0) earned the victory on the mound after striking out one, walking three and allowing two earned runs on four hits in 2.2 innings pitched.

The Bearcats' Logan Pemberton (0-1) suffered the loss with two walks and three earned runs on one hit.

Lander took a 2-0 lead in the second inning after John Mangum singled in Weston Lawing, and Zach Daly advanced home on Will Jones' sacrifice fly.

The Trojans came back in the bottom of the inning to tie it at 2-all on Jason Morozowski's two-RBI single that plated DeAndre Allen and Justin Manning.

Daly's three-run homer in the third put Lander up 5-2.

Mount Olive erupted for 10 runs in the fifth inning to take a 12-5 advantage. Stephen Wallace walked in Morozowski, Manning singled in Samauel Gailmard, Rob Shipman went home when Brett Lang was hit by a pitch, and Chris Leduc blasted a grand slam. Gailmard's sacrifice fly then plated Joe Koehler and Shipman ended the inning with a two-run homer.

Lander trimmed it to 12-7 in the sixth when Matt White and Colby Painter drove in Thomas Berry and Jones respectively.

Montevallo extended the lead to 15-7 in the seventh inning on Shipman's RBI single that scored GrantTyndall, and Manning's two-RBI shot that plated Shipman and Gailmard.

The Bearcats' final run came in the ninth when Lawing scored on Chris Hyatt's sacrifice fly.

For Lander, Lawing went 3-for-4, while Painter batted 2-for-5.
