LU players, Coach Smith reap more post-season awards

GREENWOOD - Lander baseball players Patrick Grady, Connor Lewis and Erik Lunde were named All-Americans by three different organizations over the past few weeks and head coach Kermit Smith was selected Southeast Region Coach of the Year by two after the Bearcats rode their 52-9 record all the way to the NCAA Division II College World Series.

Grady, a senior right fielder from Pompano Beach, Fla., batted .386 with 91 hits, 92 runs, nine home runs, 25 doubles, 48 walks and 49 RBI. He also had a .614 slugging percentage, .518 on-base percentage and was 16-for-16 on stolen bases. In addition to being the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year, he also earned Southeast Region Player of the Year honors by ABCA/Rawlings, Daktronics and the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA).

Grady, who set Lander single-season records in games played (61), games started (61), doubles and runs scored, finished first in NCAA Division II in runs scored, second in doubles, fourth in walks, fifth in total bases and ninth in hits and on-base percentage. In 2013, he was named second team All-American by the NCBWA and third team by Daktronics.

Lewis, a senior first baseman from Columbia, S.C., batted .353 with 91 hits, 70 runs scored, 20 home runs, 16 doubles, 42 walks and 77 RBI. He had a .655 slugging percentage to go along with a .460 on-base percentage.

Lewis, who led the country in home runs, was second in total bases, and fifth in hits and runs, set Lander single-season records in games played and started, home runs, at bats (258), and RBI.

Lunde, a senior shortstop from Pompano Beach, Fla., batted .369 with 94 hits, 76 runs, 14 home runs, four triples, 20 doubles, 45 walks and 52 RBI. He had a .643 slugging percentage, a .481 on-base percentage and was 9-for-11 on stolen bases.

Lunde, who set Lander single-season records in games played and started, hits and assists (219), was third in the country in total bases, hits, and runs; and sixth in walks.

Smith, who is Lander's all-time winningest coach with a 178-92 overall record (.659 winning percentage) in five years, was selected Southeast Region Coach of the the Year by ABCA/Rawlings and the NCBWA. Smith's career record, including, eight years at Belmont Abbey, is 407-317 overall (.562 winnning percentage).

Also making All-Southeast Region teams were pitcher Dylan Wolchik and second baseman Graham Ramos.

Wolchik, a senior from Margate, Fla., posted a 12-1 overall record with a .3.37 ERA and had 94 strikeouts in 120.1 innings pitched.  Wolchik, who set Lander single-season records in wins and strikeouts, was first in the categories in victories and starts (17).

Ramos, a senior shortstop from Tampa, Fla., batted .339 with 77 hits, 45 runs, seven home runs, three triples, 11 doubles, 68 RBI and 19 walks. He had a .507 slugging percentage, a .396 on-base percentage and was 12-of-13 on stolen bases. Ramos ranked fourth in the country in RBI.
