AMERICUS, Ga. – Georgia Southwestern's Corey Benson scored on a bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning Monday afternoon to give the Hurricanes an 8-7 Peach Belt Conference upset victory over No. 2-ranked Lander in a Peach Belt Conference game at Hurricane Stadium.
GSW, which improves to 9-20 overall and 5-13 in the PBC, won the series after splitting with the Bearcats on Sunday. Lander moves to 26-5, 16-5.
The Hurricane's Coty Graham (2-1) earned the win, walking one and allowing one hit in two innings pitched.
Lander's Brandon White (1-1) suffered the loss after striking out one, walking three and allowing one run (unearned) on three hits in 1.1 innings.
The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in the first when Erik Lunde scored on an error, only to have GSW tie the game in the bottom of the inning when Stephen Eldridge singled in Josh Sanders.
Lander took a 2-1 lead in the third after Thomas Berry's RBI single plated Patrick Grady, but the 'Canes came back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning when Benson drove in Eldridge and Jarrod Taylor went home on a wild pitch.
GSW stretched its lead to 5-2 in the fourth on Zach Moss's RBI double and Neal Chambliss' RBI single.
The Bearcats erupted for three runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth to regain the lead at 6-5. In the fifth, Graham Ramos singled in Connor Lewis, Colby Painter drove in Berry, and Austin Dunn's sacrifice fly sent Weston Lawing across the plate. Lunde scored on an error in the sixth to take the lead.
In the seventh, Lander extended the margin to 7-5 on Painter's solo home run, but GSW came back to tie the game in the eighth on RBI singles by Sanders and Eldridge.
For the Bearcats, who pounded out 14 hits, Painter batted 3-for-5, while Lunde, Grady, Lewis, Berry and Ramos had two hits apiece.
GSW had 17 hits, led by Alderman and Edlridge, who had three each.
