Lander baseball remains No. 2 in national rankings

GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team remained at No. 2 this week in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's national poll.

The Bearcats went 4-0 last week and improved their record to 27-3, the best year in the 17-year history of the program. Lander defeated rival Erskine College, 8-6, then swept the University of Montevallo in a Peach Belt Conference series, 16-4, 20-3, and 15-8.

Third baseman Colby Painter was named the PBC Player of the week, while first baseman Connor Lewis set a Lander single-season record for home runs when he hit No. 12 against Montevallo. For the week, Painter batted .562 with two homers (including his second grand slam of the season), 12 RBIs and a 1.062 slugging percentage.

Tampa (28-1 overall) is the top-ranked team with 480 points and is followed by: 2. Lander (27-3) 464, 3. West Florida (21-5) 448, 4. Minnesota State (15-4) 424, 5. West Texas A&M (24-5) 414, 6. Lynn (23-6) 392, 7. Southern Arkansas (24-7) 388, 8. Chico State (20-5) 370, 9. Georgia College (20-5) 362, and 10. Cal-Poly Pomona (20-7) 332.

The next 10 are: 11. Nova Southeastern (22-6) 310, 12. Shippensburg (14-3) 290, 13. Delta State (16-6) 288, 14. USC Aiken (21-7) 274, 15. St. Cloud State (13-4) 262, 16. Florida Southern (20-9) 224, 17. St. Mary's (21-8) 220, 18. Grand Valley State (13-5) 210, 19. Columbus State (24-8) 196, and 20. Cal Baptist (20-8) 178.

This weekend the Bearcats travel to Georgia Southwestern for a Peach Belt Conference series on Saturday and Sunday.
