No. 4-ranked Lander baseball is tops in Southeast

GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team, which remains No. 4 nationally, is the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division II's Southeast Region according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll which was released today.

Lander improved to 20-3 overall Tuesday when the Bearcats defeated Newberry College, 5-2, on the road.

In the Southeast Region poll, Lander received 10 of 12 first-place votes and totaled 118 points. Lander is followed by: 2. Georgia College, 3. USC Aiken, 4. Erskine, 5. Wingate, 6. UNC Pembroke, 7. Columbus State, 8. Mount Olive, 9. Lincoln Memorial, and 10. Montevallo.

At 19-1 overall, Tampa remained the unanimous top-ranked team in the nation with 16 first-place votes and 400 points. Tampa is followed by: 2. Minnesota State (9-2) 369 points, 3. St. Mary's (17-4) 358, 4. Lander (20-3) 352, 5. West Florida (16-2) 336, 6. Chico State (13-4) 295, 7. Grand Valley State (7-3) 292, 8. Southern Arkansas (19-4) 288, 9. Franklin Pierce (10-4) 250, and 10. Angelo State (16-5) 231.

Rounding out the top 20 are: 11. Cal Poly-Pomona (17-4) 210, 12. Georgia College (14-4) 209, 13. Lynn (18-4) 207, 14. Shippensburg (7-3) 201, 15. Southern New Hampshire (9-3) 171, 16. USC Aiken (14-5) 154, 17. West Texas A&M (16-4) 149, 18. Missouri Southern (13-2) 128, 19. California Baptist (15-3) 104, and 20. East Stroudsburg (9-2) 87.
