BELMONT, N.C. – Connor Lewis smacked his third home run in three games Sunday afternoon to lead the No. 20 Lander baseball team to a 10-5 non-conference victory over Belmont Abbey at Abbey Yard.
With the win, Lander (3-0) completed the three-game, season-opening series sweep of the Crusaders. Belmont Abbey drops to 0-3.
Chess Malone (1-0) earned the win on the mound for the Bearcats, striking out four, walking one and allowing three earned runs on five hits in 3.1 innings. Brandon White picked up his first save of the season with three strikeouts in 1.1 innings.
The Crusaders' Logan Redmond (0-1) suffered the loss, striking out three, walking two and allowing three earned runs on four hits in 4.2 innings.
The Bearcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning when All-American Patrick Grady walked, then later scored on a throwing error, and Zach Giczewski stroked a two-run double that scored Weston Lawing and Chris Hyatt.
Belmont Abbey cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth on an RBI single by Lorenzo Wright and an RBI groundout by Anthony Dimino.
The Crusaders added one run in the seventh on Michael Falsetti RBI single, then plated two more in the eighth on an RBI single by Weston Clark and an RBI double by Conor Kwalwasser.
Berry added a two-run double and Colby Painter an RBI double in the ninth to conclude the scoring.
