Bearcats outmuscle NC State in 27-12 road win

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Lander University women's rugby team hit the road and came away with a hard-fought 27-12 victory over NC State on Saturday, Oct. 18. The Bearcats showcased their toughness, composure and grit in a match that tested their adaptability and resilience from start to finish.

Lander came out strong and maintained momentum throughout the match, with tries from Carmen Spears, Lily Venegas, Emma Cook and two from Kaitlyn Ausmus powering the offense. Lindsey Pysell added one successful conversion to cap the scoring.

Head coach Makayla Lowe-Richesin commended her team's ability to adjust and stay focused under pressure.

"Today I saw adaptability from the team in many ways, which was great to see," Lowe-Richesin said. "They handled pressure well and stayed composed in key moments. Credit to NC State for bringing a physical game—it challenged us and made the win that much more rewarding."

Cook was named Bearcat of the Match for her outstanding defensive presence and unwavering leadership throughout the game.

Lander will celebrate Senior Night on Saturday, Oct. 25, as it hosts Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m. on New Res Field. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the Bearcats as they honor their seniors and look to extend their winning streak.
